Turning Your Chaotic Master Bedroom Into an Organized Oasis
By Christopher W Smith
In crowded households, the master bedroom often becomes a place where we keep things we don't really know what
to do with. It's easy to just close the door and forget about the disarray, a fact that causes us to continue to
amass items in the bedroom which really have no business being there. Give this practice enough time, and the extra
items will overwhelm the closet and start infringing on your bedroom space. What to do?
You can start by getting some boxes, labeling them with different rooms of the house, and sorting the unwanted
bedroom items into them. When all of these items have been placed into the appropriate box, carry the box to the
room where the things really do belong. Even if you don't get them all put away immediately, they'll at least be
out of your bedroom.
A common affliction in many homes is that there isn't enough closet space in the master bedroom. By
incorporating closet organizers, though, you can make the most of the space you do have. You can hire professionals
to do this for you, or if you're willing to put in a little time researching and designing your own system, you can
do it yourself. You can also utilize under-the-bed storage boxes to store your off season clothing.
Go through all of your clothes and decide which items you really wear. If there are items that don't fit or you
don't wear because you don't like them, sort them out. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven't worn a garment
for over a year, even though it does fit, you're probably not going to wear it again, so it should go in the pile
with the items you're getting rid of. After you have sorted out all the things you really don't need, you can
either have a garage sale or just donate the clothes to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Getting rid of unused
articles of clothing will free up a lot of closet space.
Dressers are another problem area in many bedrooms. We store things in them that we assume we'll use at a later
date, but we never quite get around to digging them out again. If these items weren't weeded out when you sorted
things that belonged in other rooms, take a close look at them now. Ask yourself if you really need this item
cluttering up your dresser space.
The top of the dresser can also be a catch-all for unwanted items. Develop an organizational system for your
dresser as a whole, and stick to it. Baskets look nice on a dresser, and you can keep smaller items picked up and
looking neat. If you put plastic boxes in your dresser drawers, you can keep smaller items sorted and make them
easier to find.
Your bedroom should provide you with a place where you can go to relax and escape the pressures of the day. If
the space is full of clutter, it's never going to be the oasis you so desperately need. Keep your room organized
and clutter-free, and you'll sleep better and wake to a brighter new day.
